Live: Queensland Premier Campbell Newman announces state election for January 31
Updated
Queenslanders will head to the polls on January 31 after Premier Campbell Newman announced a snap election this morning.
Mr Newman visited Acting Governor Tim Carmody earlier today requesting he issue the writs for the election, which was widely expected to be held in March.
The LNP under Mr Newman won 78 of 89 seats in the 2012 election but the latest opinion polls have the two major parties neck and neck on a two-party basis.
