Richard Michail, 40, was extradited from Melbourne last week and appeared in Southport Magistrates Court yesterday on charges of extortion and grievous bodily harm.
The grievous bodily harm charge relates to an incident involving a Mermaid Beach sex shop in July 2004. Police will allege the owners of the shop were in discussions with Michail’s partner, a Gold Coast signwriter, over new signage for the property.

The deal went sour and Michail allegedly confronted the couple, telling them: “You don’t know who I am. I’m with the Finks and we run the Gold Coast.”
Defence lawyer Christopher Hannay applied for bail for his client, telling the court Michail had to return to Melbourne to adhere to previous parole conditions there. He said a $50,000 cash surety had been posted for Michail in Victoria and argued there was no need for another in Queensland.
Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll granted Michail conditional bail, stipulating the surety must be paid within seven days of his appearance.
Michail will reappear in the same court on July 29.
