A bikie gang member has been arrested after he was allegedly found with thousands of dollars worth of drugs and a large amount of cash.

Armed police swooped on Andrew Michael Smith, 28, understood to be a member of the Rebels MC, as he was leaving a hotel in his car in Woodend, North Canterbury, about 8.50pm on Thursday last week.

Detective Sergeant Rex Barnett said Smith was found with about 70 grams of methamphetamine which had an estimated street value of $70,000.

The gang member was also found with a large amount of cash, Barnett said.

Police opposed Smith's bail when he appeared at Christchurch District Court today charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply.

He was remanded without plea to August 7 when his Auckland-based defence counsel is expected to apply for his release on electronically monitored bail.

The three-week delay will allow the application to be filed with the court and the Probation Service to check the suggested address in Christchurch.

Police have opposed bail and Smith has remained in custody since his arrest.

He made a brief appearance before Judge David Saunders in the Christchurch District Court today, by video-link from the men's prison.
