Senior Tas bikie charged over assaults

A senior Tasmanian outlaw bikie gang member has been accused of assaulting an Italian man in a toilet block and separately attacking another man with a tomahawk axe.

The 37-year-old Sergeant at Arms of the Bandidos' Mersey River chapter was on Monday hit with a string of charges after a police operation in the state's north that netted five others.

It is alleged he seriously assaulted the Italian man at East Devonport in January and seriously assaulted a 53-year-old man with an axe at his Latrobe home in June.

The man was also charged over transporting a rifle and ammunition in February and evading police on a motorcycle in June.

He'll appear in Devonport Magistrates Court on February 5.

Five people, two Bandidos members and three associates of the club, also face charges including assault, trafficking firearms and causing grievous bodily harm.

"(We) want the community to be reassured that the poor behaviour exhibited by members of these gangs won't be tolerated," Detective Inspector Kim Steven said.
