Motorcyclist dies on Bruce Hwy

A MACKAY man who had been taking part in a Rebels Motorcycle Club memorial ride died in a crash on the Bruce Hwy.

Police investigate the crash in which a motorcyclist died after a collision with a truck 10km south of Carmila yesterday morning.

A MACKAY man who had been taking part in a Rebels Motorcycle Club memorial ride died in a crash on the Bruce Hwy yesterday.

The man's motorcycle and a semi-trailer, believed to be carrying a wide load, collided 10km south of Carmila, about 10am.

Shortly after the crash a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the 42-year-old rider had died at the scene.

The fatality is yet another black mark against the Bruce Hwy's climbing road toll.

A Mackay police spokesman said the man had been heading north on the Bruce Hwy with a contingent of Rebels club members.

"The truck was also heading north, under a pilot escort, the two have collided after the rider appeared to have lost control," he said.

One lane of the Bruce Hwy was closed at 10.30am yesterday but was reopened to all traffic by 4pm.

A Rebels Motorcycle Club spokesman said the man was not part of the club.

The spokesman said Rebel club members and friends from all over Queensland had met in Rockhampton for the annual Phil Memorial Ride, commemorating a former member who had died.

The crash victim was with the Mackay contingent of Rebels club members returning from the memorial ride.

A witness who passed the scene of the crash said there were "fairly extensive" skid marks.

"When we drove past there were about 10 bikies on the side of the road," the witness said.

"They looked concerned."

Actively campaigning to 'Fix the Bruce', George Christensen asked when the carnage would ever stop.

Mr Christensen, the Federal Member for Dawson, said without knowing the circumstances behind yesterday's crash, any life lost on the roads was a tragedy that needn't have occurred.

"It's also a reminder for us in the Federal arena that we've got to do all we can to ensure that the Bruce Hwy is adequately funded," Mr Christensen said.

"We need to improve safety for motorists driving it or motorcyclists riding it."
