A former business partner of Rebels bikie gang president Alex Vella has
been placed in protective custody today following his arrest over a $4
million alleged scam involving forged legal and property documents.
Anthony Caradonna, 46, from Fairfield, was arrested by fraud squad
detectives yesterday and charged with 26 offences involving the
defrauding of at least three people, including Mr Vella, of $4.1 million
between 2003 and 2006.
Caradonna allegedly wrote a series of legal documents using a
solicitor's letterhead that claimed he owned a property in a Sydney
suburb.
He allegedly obtained a series of loans - varying from $100,000 to $1.13
million - using forged legal and property documents.
During a court hearing at Parramatta Local Court today, Caradonna's
lawyer asked that his client be placed in protective custody because one
of his alleged victims was Mr Vella.
His lawyer said that protection was necessary because Caradonna had
received death threats and had been kidnapped at one point.
A police charge sheet alleges that Caradonna had applied for an $850,000
loan using documents that carried the name of Alessio Vella.
Caradonna was refused bail and will reappear at Parramatta Local Court
on May 29.
