The South Australian Government has been warned it will face some
resistance in Parliament next week over its new laws aimed at bikie
gangs.
Independent MP Kris Hanna plans to push for legislative amendments.
He says innocent people could get caught up in the new laws, which put
suspicion on anyone who may have regular contact with an outlaw bikie
gang member.
"People that are concerned about the average citizen's rights whether
they're, you know, people that have gone to university or whether
they're people who are unemployed or whether they're people that drink
in pubs that you and I wouldn't drink in, I'm still concerned about
their rights and I'm concerned about them getting caught up in
legislative overkill," he said.
Mr Hanna says he will push for amendments to prevent that from
happening, including a judicial review of the legislation.
"I think it's essential that judges have the right to review every
decision that's made under the legislation and I also think that it's
essential that we have the legislation existing for only two years so
that the police can get in, do the job and get out," he said.
