Tattoo shop shooting: bikie faces retribution.
Caroline Marcus | June 22, 2008
HE IS the bikie who allegedly shot his leader and brother-in-law and now
faces something worse than prison time - retribution from his gang.
Damien James Rainbow, 33, of Riverstone, used a sawn-off rifle to shoot
Michael May, the Hawkesbury chapter president of the Life and Death
Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, Parramatta Local Court heard yesterday.
May, 31, is the husband of Rainbow's sister and reportedly
vice-president of the motorcycle club.
At 5.45pm on Monday, police were called to the Naked Gun II Tattoo
Studio in Windsor, where they found May with a bullet lodged just below
his knee.
He was taken to Nepean Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
On Friday, police executed a search warrant on Rainbow's home.
Under a sofa cushion they allegedly found a .22 calibre rifle, which had
been shortened to a pistol, as well as a small quantity of .22 calibre
ammunition.
The gun was allegedly identified as the same seen in closed-circuit
camera footage taken at the scene.
Police say they also found at Rainbow's home a long-sleeved black
T-shirt with a motif of the motorcycle club, a baseball cap and dark
pants that were allegedly identified as those worn by the offender and
captured on tape.
Rainbow was arrested at his sister's home in McGraths Hill and taken to
Windsor police station where he was charged with wounding a person with
intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possessing a shortened firearm
without authority and firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure a
person or property.
Rainbow has denied any involvement in the incident.
Police do not believe the shooting was related to the victim's
relationship with Rainbow's sister. The couple are understood to be
separated.
Rainbow, an unemployed labourer, now faces retribution from gang members
over the shooting. The court heard yesterday he was still under threat
while in custody.
Another member of the community is also under threat.
Rainbow had already attempted self harm following the incident, police
facts said.
He was refused bail to reappear in Penrith Local Court on August 15.
