May 27, 2008
Water Police at 1770 Marina jetty prepare to go over the crime scene and
board the boat where it s believed a man shot himself

A MAN who shot himself while police questioned him on a boat at 1770 on
Sunday is believed to be Rockhampton fugitive bikie Michael James
Miller.
Police said the man could not be named until relatives, who live
interstate, had been notified.
Gladstone District Inspector Graham Coleman said about 2pm the man
pointed the gun at police before turning it on himself.
Two officers, one from Agnes Water and one from Gladstone Police, were
conducting a routine patrol on Round Hill Creek, about 500 metres from
the 1770 Marina, when they questioned the man on his unmarked sailing
boat.
"During their enquiries and their discussions he's produced a firearm,
which was initially pointed at police, and he's shot himself," Inspector
Coleman said.
He said the man then fell into the water with the gun and the police
officers had to retrieve him.
A post-mortem was being conducted in Rockhampton yesterday. A group of
holidaymakers in town for the 1770 Festival heard the gunshot and turned
to see the aftermath of the alleged suicide.
Police offered the holidaymakers counselling on Sunday night and again
yesterday.
Inspector Coleman said there were no witnesses to the actual incident.
"The two officers were doing a routine patrol when they saw an unmarked
boat and approached the male person on board," Inspector Coleman said.
"There is currently a police investigation, an inquiry by the Ethical
Standards Command and a coronial inquiry taking place."
The police officers involved are undergoing counselling. Police,
including divers, scoured the boat from top to bottom in Round Hill
Creek yesterday, allegedly looking for weapons, drugs and money.
Miller, a Rockhampton Rebels Motorcycle Club member, had been on the run
since he failed to appear in court on drug charges in February 2006.
He was due to stand trial in Rockhampton Supreme Court on February 20
