Poker run deals a winning hand for charity
Wednesday, 10 November 2004

The annual Poker Run was again charging up the highway this Saturday with motorbikes, and cars roaring into nearby local towns to win the best poker hand.

With 87 motorbikes, a busload of Nerrilda nurses, six hot rods, and several family cars, the event was heralded as a huge success by chairperson and spokesperson for the Outback Riders Club, Ken Williams.

The Outback Riders Social Club is the chief organiser for the Poker Run, an event where motorcycle clubs and people interested in participating travel from Port Augusta to Port Germein, Laura, Wirrabara, Melrose, Wilmington, Quorn, Stirling, and back to Port Augusta, picking up five cards along the way.

The Poker Run is held on the first Saturday in April and November every year and proceeds go to the Nerrilda Nursing Home.

"It's just an excuse for a bunch of people who have a common interest in motorbikes to get together and have a great day and it's also a bit of a family event," Ken said.

A Port Pirie man won the grand prize of $500 for the best poker hand with three aces.

Prizes for Best Bike and Best Motorcar were also awarded to a restored Harley Davidson and a 1927 Essex hotrod.

Two local bands, Mild Steel and Aftershock entertained the riders at the after party held at the Northern and Exchange Hotel beer garden where they gathered to congratulate the winners and end the day with a cold beer.

"Everyone had a great time," Ken said.

Through the Poker Run, the Outback riders club has contributed over $2500 to the Nerrilda nursing home and the committee is already underway in organising the next run.

"I would just like to thank everyone in Port Augusta for supporting us. Our sponsor is very generous with their sponsorship and we have had the support from the local community who really get behind us," he said.

"Special thanks to the highway patrol officer at Port Germein who gave us a police escort to Wirrabara," he said.

"It's fantastic to see the committee and the local community make it all come together and were looking forward to the next one."
