Bikers are real angels
ABOUT 60 big-hearted bikers from across Australia have ridden to
Bendigo for a national conference on child abuse today.
Child sex abuse survivor and People Power state election candidate
for
Prahran Barbara Biggs and Melbourne identity and social worker Les
Twentyman are among the speakers at the second annual Bikers Against
Child Abuse conference.
Bruce "Cemo" Daprano, of the Victorian chapter of BACA, said
everyone was
welcome to attend the conference at the Golden Hills Motel, Marong
Road, and learn about the work of the group.
Bikers have to meet strict criteria to be a member, including
passing police checks and being put on probation for 12 months after
joining, Cemo said.
BACA, which has the approval of Victoria Police, exists with the
intent to
create a safer environment for abused children, which the bikers
attempt to achieve in a variety of ways.
"We take kids for a ride, their families for a ride,"
he said.
"If there's a problem in a certain area where there are undesirable
elements around, we organise patrols at all times on a regular
basis.
"We never have anything to do with the perpetrators, we don't even
know who they are - we're not a vigilante group at all."
Cemo welcomed interest from Bendigo bikers wanting to start a
chapter in the
city.
The conference starts at noon today.
Anyone wishing to apply to be a member of the group should contact
Cemo on 0407 374 178.
