A-G rejects call for inquiry into police assault charge

Tasmania's Attorney-General has dismissed a call for an investigation into why a policeman from Glenorchy, north of Hobart, was charged with assault.

A jury yesterday acquitted John George Ward, 42, of assault.

The prosecution alleged Sergeant Ward repeatedly punched a member of the Devils' Henchmen motorcycle gang while the man was handcuffed in the back of a police car.

It took the jury just over an hour to find the police officer not guilty.

The police association says Sergeant Ward should not have been charged in the first place, accusing the Director of Public Prosecutions of taking the word of a bikie gang member over that of three police officers.

The association's Randolph Wierenga wants the Attorney-General to investigate.

"This prosecution would seem to be a gross waste of public resources," he said.

But Judy Jackson says it would be inappropriate for her to interfere with or comment on the way in which matters are prosecuted.
