Mafia made template for bikies
26Sep06

WE urge the police and the courts on the Gold Coast to keep on busting bikie gangs until it hurts as a way to protect this city of the evils of organised crime.

Bikies, according to the Australian Crime Commission, have begun a major push to legitimise elements of their criminal activities on the Gold Coast.

Their tactics fulfil the template already created by mafia gangs in the United States.

After having built up wealth through racketeering, standover tactics and subversion of the laws of the land, the mafia legitimised themselves  mostly in Las Vegas  by buying businesses that were responsible in terms of tax and accountancy.

The money they had made by selling drugs to the oppressed and the stupid suddenly became respectable; the violence they brought to bear through standover methods somehow was forgotten.

Bikie gangs who have moved into 'entertainment', security and loan sharking  for these read nightclubs, bouncers and standover tactics  have corrupted the way business is done on the Gold Coast.

These people never should be given legitimacy.

The trouble with doing business with the devil is the devil doesn't deal in principle.

Bikie gangs, whatever cloak of respectability they may try to wear, never will play by the Marquis of Queensberry rules.

They don't really submit themselves to legal business convention and anyone they deal with is at risk.

The Gold Coast has found itself particularly at risk from these people because the city has a soft underbelly exposed to the denizens of the night.

Our entertainment industry gives the bikies an entry ticket to exploitation.

But what every business and law-abiding individual on the Gold Coast should understand is that bikies bring with them a culture of fear.

This is best illustrated by the fact that witnesses giving evidence at today's magistrates court hearings into the Royal Pines shootings already have expressed concern at being identified before the case even starts.

We cannot allow this city or its businesses to be intimidated by outlaw forces.

We urge the police to make life as uncomfortable as possible for those who would seek to use the mafia as its template.

The image of this city cannot be soiled by bikie rubbish. Up here we say:

Bravo Broncos

WE normally don't respond to the bovver-boy tactics of southern states when it comes to football finals time, but this week's Sydney Daily Telegraph front page blaring out 'Boo the Broncos' is just too much.

Sydney, the rugby league capital, this year has to be content with cheering on the Sydney Swans, an AFL team, while Queensland at least has the Brisbane Broncos to support. As well, Melbourne  the home of the AFL  doesn't appear to have a team in the AFL grand final.

So between now and next Monday, we urge our readers  in the best possible spirit of course  to Monster a Mexican or Kick a Vic.

And we also want them to yell, unashamedly, Bravo Broncos.
