Yakuza claim in attempted
murder case
Australia - THE girlfriend of a man shot eight times on the Gold
Coast admitted in court today she knew nothing about allegations he
was a member of a Japanese underworld gang or Yakuza.
Cara Stewart gave evidence in Southport Magistrates Court in the
case against the bikie brother of Gold Coast phone entrepreneur Ron
Bakir, who helped finance convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby's
defence.
Police allege Finks gang member Yassar Bakir, 31, allegedly shot
Pita William Wilson, 30, eight times at Southport Spit on the Gold
Coast on June 9 this year.
Yassar Bakir has been charged with attempted murder, dangerous
conduct with a weapon and possession of a firearm.
His co-accused Steven Milton Hill, also charged with attempted
murder, was arrested overnight on a further charge of conspiracy to
commit crimes.
Ms Stewart told the court she went out with Mr Wilson for six months
but during that period didn't know where he lived or how he funded
his lifestyle.
The pair were booked into a five-star hotel at Broadbeach on the
night Mr Wilson was allegedly shot on a secluded road after going to
meet Yassar Bakir to recover some personal belongings.
Solicitor Bill Potts, acting for Mr Hill, focused on Ms Stewart's
relationship with Mr Wilson during cross-examination.
"Were you aware of accusations he (Wilson) was a standover merchant
and a member of Yakuza, a Japanese underworld gang?," Mr Potts
asked.
"No," Ms Stewart replied.
Mr Potts had earlier described Mr Wilson as "a ghost or a
will-o'-the-wisp".
Ms Stewart said Mr Wilson told her he owned a bulletproof vest
"because it looked cool".
Both Mr Potts and Yassar Bakir's lawyer Adrian Gundelach will apply
for bail for their clients tomorrow day three of the committal
hearing
