Top boxers drop in to say thanks to Gladiators for support
Jamie Pitman and Chad Bennett were special guests at the Telarah Boxing Gym and
Gladiator Motorcycle Club's annual boxing fundraiser on Saturday.
The Australian boxing stars offered their support to the Les Darcy fundraiser
after both had enjoyed sponsorship support from the Gladiators early in their
boxing careers.
The annual fundraiser, in its sixth year, enjoyed good support from the Maitland
community and Les Darcy committee chairman Robbie Reid said the money raised was
"quite substantial" and will assist in getting the Darcy memorial up and
running.
The day also proved a good opportunity for some of Telarah Boxing Gym's rising
talent to display their skills in a series of exhibition bouts.
Daniel Murray sparred with Newcastle professional Peter Bell and Australian
League title holder Nathan Griffiths, while young Telarah Gym fighters,
12-year-old Brandon Grach and Matthew Knot, impressed in their sparring dual.
Telarah trainer Neville Short said Grach loomed as an exciting prospect despite
being two years short of the minimum boxing age.
Telarah heavyweight Adam Pilgrim, Kurri Kurri's Joel Squires and Gillieston
Heights professional Michael Kilmurray were also on display, while Maitland PCYC
put on karate and kickboxing demonstrations.
