July 6, 2006

GANG squad detectives investigating the shooting of a bouncer outside a Kings Cross nightclub in February have charged a Hells Angel member with concealing the offence.

Mehmet Hersli, 29, of Canterbury, is the first person charged over the shooting outside Sapphire Suite and the seventh Hells Angel arrested in Sydney in the past two months.

He was allegedly among a group of Hells Angels refused entry to the nightclub shortly before midnight on February 11. During an ensuing argument, one of the bikies allegedly produced a handgun and fired several shots. A bullet hit a 27-year-old security guard from Liverpool in the leg; another grazed the leg of a woman waiting to enter the club.

Hersli was arrested about 9am on Tuesday and charged with concealing a serious offence, having goods in custody, possessing a poker machine and ammunition.

He appeared that day in Burwood Local Court and was granted bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on September 1. The Sapphire Suite shooting was the first in a recent spate in the city and western suburbs involving bikie gangs.

A Nomad was shot outside Men's Gallery in Pitt Street, allegedly by a Hells Angel, on March 16. Another Nomad was shot at Showgirls in Darlinghurst Road on March 26.

July 5, 2006 - 3:10PM

A bikie charged over an inner-city nightclub shooting will face a Sydney court in September.

Police allege Mehmet Hersli, 29, was one of a number of people involved in a heated argument when shots were fired outside a Kings Cross nightclub on February 11.

A 27-year-old security guard was shot in the leg and a bullet grazed the leg of a woman waiting to enter the club, police said.

Hersli, of Canterbury, was arrested yesterday and charged with concealing a serious offence, goods in custody, possessing a poker machine and possessing ammunition.

Hersli, allegedly a member of an outlawed motorcycle gang, faced Burwood Local Court yesterday and was granted conditional bail by Magistrate Jane Mottley.

He will face Downing Centre Local Court on September 1.
