Daughter renounces statement
29.09.2004
The daughter of former gang chief Kelly Raymond Robertson, who is accused of
murder, yesterday recanted on a statement she made about the killing.
Kevin Paul Weavers, the president of the Highway 61 Motorcycle Club, died of
severe blood loss after being stabbed at the gang headquarters in Manurewa last
September.
Robertson, the immediate past-president of the gang, is accused of murder along
with Michael Douglas Gould and Michael William Brittain, who was said to have
initiated the hit.
Yesterday, Robertson's 15-year-old daughter, who has automatic name suppression
because she is under 17, told the High Court at Auckland that her father was
crying when he told her there had been an accident.
But prosecutor Brian Dickey showed her a copy of her statement to police and her
depositions statement in the district court. In them she said Robertson told her
Weavers had come at him with a knife.
Her father told her he took the knife from Weavers and stabbed him four times in
the leg.
But yesterday, the girl said half of what was in her police statement was not
true.
She said she was scared, confused, under pressure from police and wanted to go
home.
The girl, who was 14 at the time, said the day she made the statement she had
been woken at 6am by armed offenders squad officers and was at the police
station for six hours without a support person.
