A DISPUTE between some members of two chapters of the Nomads
outlaw motorcycle gang erupted yesterday in shooting and a 100km
highway police chase.
New South Wales police described the outbreak of violence between
the Parramatta and Newcastle chapters as a new and disturbing
phenomenon among bikie gangs which could spark further problems.
It comes as Middle Eastern crime figures infiltrate Sydney's outlaw motorcycle gangs, resulting in a greater propensity for random violence among these groups, police sources said.
Four members of the Newcastle Nomads were injured in the midday attack.
The incident occurred at the Newcastle Chapter's headquarters in Chin Chen St, Islington, where the Parramatta chapter was holding an inter-branch meeting.
Two men were taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital with serious head and facial injuries, with one shot in the leg.
A short time later, two more victims with head injuries - one also shot in the leg - turned up John Hunter Hospital seeking treatment.
All four were members of the Nomads' Newcastle chapter.
Those shot were the chapter's president of about 18 months, a man known as "Critter",
and another man who is a life member of the Nomads. A Nomads enforcer nicknamed "Magilla" was pistol whipped.
Islington residents were surprised by the flare-up of violence, saying gang members usually kept to themselves.
"I had just walked out my back door when I heard two shots, bang, bang, straight after each other," one resident said.
"Then the bikes fired up pretty quickly and flew straight up the street ... you could tell they were in a hurry to get out of there."
Police said up to 15 bikies headed south on their motorcycles, splitting into groups as they were pursued by police.
Police wearing bulletproof vests intercepted eight at the Hawkesbury River hamlet of Mooney Mooney, on the old Pacific Highway, about 2pm.
The bikies were surrounded by 15 police cars and put their hands on their heads while police searched them,
Five were arrested, including the Parramatta chapter's vice president and sergeant-at-arms.
Chief Inspector Peter Wilde said the men were taken to Hornsby police station for forensic testing.
The other bikies were later intercepted by police.
