The 37-year-old moved slowly, assisted by a crutch and prosthetic leg, to enter the dock to make his pleas.

Pirani lost a finger and leg as a result of the accident near Hastings, which happened when a four-wheel-drive and a motorcycle collided during a charity poker run – a variation on a pub crawl – organised by Outlaws Motorcycle Club on February 11.

Several other motorcycles in the convoy of 70 bikes were also struck down in the aftermath of the initial collision.

Hastings mother-of-three Gaelene Ayre was killed. She was a pillion passenger. Her husband Michael was among the seriously injured.
