PORT Fairy has been
warned that an outlaw motorcycle club intends to hit town during the annual
Labor Day weekend folk festival.
Police sources said the Coffin Cheaters Motorcycle Club was expected in the
historic seaside port, about 290km west of Melbourne, this weekend. Local
police are on alert.
Motorcycle club members had travelled to the town in past years, sources
said.
Thousands attend the
festival, which has national and international musical acts over four days.
This year's is a
sell-out.
Port Fairy locals said
the gang had caused trouble in past years, particularly at one of the
caravan parks.
One local businessman,
who wanted to remain anonymous, said it was disturbing that authorities
appeared to be trying to find accommodation for the bikies.
"Businesses have been
turning people trying to get accommodation away for months and months and
months," he said.
"Yet the police and
council have been bending over backwards trying to find them somewhere to
stay."
Moyne Shire Council
did not comment last night.
The Port Fairy Folk
Festival chairman did not respond to Herald Sun calls yesterday.
