AN ex-Outlaws Motorcycle Club president will be behind bars for at least the next year on charges of theft, handling stolen goods and robbery.

Judge Leslie Ross said Brendan Wayne Peterson, 32, had committed the offences during a six-week period last year while he was on bail over other firearms and assault charges.

He was arrested in May last year during a pre-dawn police swoop on properties linked to the Outlaws.

Peterson, of Tootgarook in Victoria, pleaded guilty to two counts of handling stolen goods, two of theft and one each of attempting to possess a drug of dependence, robbery and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The County Court in Melbourne heard that Peterson used standover tactics, telling a man he had to pay him $250 if he wanted his own car removed from an associate's property.

Peterson then demanded that the fearful man sign the car over to him, which he did.

Judge Ross said Peterson had been introduced to the man as an Outlaws president.

The court also heard that Peterson used his tray truck or let others use the vehicle to steal a caravan and cars.

Peterson's willingness to use the tray truck added a degree of professionalism to his conduct.

Peterson's barrister had earlier argued that his association with the gang exerted some influence on his anti-social behaviour.

Peterson, who was already in Barwon Prison, was yesterday handed a 3½-year jail term.
