Jury out in bikie shooting trial
September 27, 2006 04:31pm

A JURY has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of a man accused of gunning down his mate outside a Perth aquatic centre two years ago.

Johnny Montani, 41, of Morley, is on trial in the Western Australian Supreme Court for the wilful murder of former Coffin Cheaters bikie gang member Kevin Ashley Woodhouse, 36, on May 12, 2004.

Prosecutors have alleged that Mr Montani donned dark clothing and a motorcycle helmet and shot Mr Woodhouse four times while the victim was sitting on a bench waiting for the Bayswater Waves Aquatic Centre to open.

Later that day, police watched Mr Montani take several bulging garbage bags to a waste disposal business.

The prosecution says the bags contained spent revolver shell casings, dark clothes, a motorcycle helmet and hand-written letters meant for Melbourne underworld figure Tony Mokbel.

In the letters, which were never sent, Mr Montani offered to kill Coffin Cheaters bikie gang members for money.

But Mr Montani claims he ghost-wrote the letters on behalf of Mr Woodhouse, because he was trying to find out whether there was truth to rumours Mokbel wanted Coffin Cheaters members dead.

Mr Woodhouse intended to use the information to reconcile with the gang, Mr Montani told the trial.

During the trial, Mr Montani said he had been disposing of the letters and the other material he thought police might consider "suspicious or questionable" if they came to question him.

But he maintained he was not involved in the shooting.

Mr Montani, a self-admitted "keen shooter", said he had loved Mr Woodhouse like a "brother".
