SPEEDING motorcyclists are continuing to cause alarm for police who
say it is only a matter of time before another rider dies on local
roads.
Wynnum District Traffic Branch Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant
Dennis Hayes said: "Of the four fatalities to occur in the
Metropolitan South police region this year, three have been motor
cyclists, all of which have involved speed as a causal factor," he
said.
Senior Sergeant Hayes said with these figures in mind, it was
amazing the speeds at which police were continuing to catch
motorcyclists.
He said: "Recently, officers from the Wynnum District Traffic Branch
have been responsible for the interception of two motorcyclists
travelling at an appalling speed."
The most recent was a Friday night when a 30-year-old Alexandra
Hills man was allegedly clocked at 184km/h on Old Cleveland Road
East, Capalaba, which is an 80km/h zone.
He was charged with speeding and riding dangerousy and is to appear
in the Cleveland Magsitrates Court on April 4.
A 34-year-old man from Mundoolun will appear at the Holland Park
Magistrates court this Thursday for riding dangerously on the
Gateway Motorway in February, allegedly at 229km/h.
"It's just absurd that we're getting these kinds of speeds and three
of our four deaths were on motorcycles," Senior Sergeant Hayes said.
He said police had been alerted to pay particular attention to
motorcyclists in an endeavour to reduce their speeds and keep them
out of fatal accidents.
He said he was hopeful the court appearances of others would show
some deterrent to others anticipating riding in a similar manner.
