Six shots were sprayed into the front of a Fieldstone Blvd house about 10.15pm.
Several bullets tore through the front door and into family room where a 43-year-old man was sitting.
Cardinia CIU Sergeant Phillip Jury said the man is a member of the Rebel Motorcycle Gang and known to police.
The man’s 47-year-old partner and their two children, aged eight and 10, were also home at the time.
“No one was injured and the police are thankful for that,” Sgt Phillip Jury.
“I’m happy to say we believe it is not a random incident and the house was a target.”
Sgt Jury said police had no suspects but confirmed bikie gang links were being explored and Echo Taskforce had been informed.
If the attack proved to be gang related, a revenge attack was “always a concern”, Sgt Jury said.
He said the Rebels and Outlaws motorcycle gangs both had a presence in Pakenham.
Sgt Jury said the occupant of the home was not co-operating with police.
“It’s always disappointing, because it makes our investigation so much harder with an incident like this,” he said.
“We want to get guns off the street. We don’t want anyone in danger, no matter what their situation.”
Recovered bullets have been sent to forensics and police expect to know later today what type of weapon was used.
Police want to speak to the driver of a small red car with LED tail-lights seen nearby after shots were heard.
