Qld's bikie laws architect quits

THE resignation of Queensland's solicitor-general is not linked to a court challenge against the anti-bikie laws he helped write, the government says.

Walter Sofranoff's resignation was confirmed on Wednesday, on the same day the United Motorcycle Council said it would lodge a High Court challenge to the bikie laws.

A spokesman for Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the two things were not related.

After nine years in the job, Mr Sofranoff was ready to move on, the spokesman said, adding there would be tributes to him in parliament later in the day.

But Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says she wants a full explanation.

"It seems highly unusual he's suddenly resigned," she said.

"He is highly regarded, not just in government, but the wider legal community.

"With the current attorney-general we are stuck with, we cannot to lose our best and brightest minds in this state."
