A man who died after being dropped in a critical condition on the doorstep of the St John Ambulance station in Whangarei had a gunshot wound to his chest.

John Henry Harris, also known as 'John Boy', was a patched Tribesmen member and police believe an internal gang incident may have occurred in the lead up to the 37-year-old's death.

They believe the incident may have started from a dispute over a vehicle.

Police have launched a homicide investigation and are seeking two vehicles - a red 2007 Holden Commodore GTS, registration JCS248, and a black 2011 Holden Commodore SS, registration FZC162.

They are also asking for sightings of a group of men gathered in the Whangarei or Kamo areas in the early hours of Tuesday.

Burke said police have now identified two properties of interest, one in central Whangarei and the other north of the city.

"This is a complex investigation clearly involving gang members. Co-operation is not immediately at hand," Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Burke said that as police believed the incident was gang-related, "we do not believe there is any on-going risk to members of the public".

"However, identifying and locating the person or persons involved in this incident remains our number one priority."

Burke said police could confirm Harri's death was not connected to the murder of Moses Mahanga, who died of gunshot wounds in Whangarei two weeks ago.
