HEAVILY armed police have raided a suspected outlaw bikie headquarters in the heart of Newcastle’s CBD.

Officers from Strike Force Raptor smashed down the front door of a two-storey building formerly home to Strokers pool hall shortly after 11am, detaining one man inside for questioning.

Others tore through a roller-door at the rear of the King St premises, which adjoins the city’s main Centrelink office, as stunned office workers looked on.

Most were incredulous that they had been working beside or opposite a suspected outlaw bikie den.

Nearby residents said they had seen bikies come and go via the rear entrance to the building over the past few days.

“There have been a lot of them around just recently. It is a bit of a worry,” one resident, who asked not to be named, said.

It is understood police suspect the building was being used as a headquarters by the Rebels OMCG. Its vast ground-floor interior was mostly bare today, apart from a bar, pool table, couches and a few pieces of gym equipment.

It was the latest in a series of raids on Hunter Region bikie dens over the past two weeks.

On Saturday, Strike Force Raptor crews stormed a warehouse in Tea Gardens suspected of being a Comancheros hangout.

Another building used as a clubhouse for the past 40 years by members of the Life and Death outlaw motorcycle gang in the Lake Macquarie suburb of Boolaroo was raided last week due to alleged breaches of alcohol licensing laws.

Police in that raid seized thousands of dollars worth of items, but today’s operation appeared unlikely to yield as much material.
