Fiddling with the S&S  G

On the way home last night, bout a mile or so away the bike starts 2 stroking....Check to see the chokes not on, didn't appear to be..The bike didn't want to idle as I unlocked the shed, so resigned myself to having a look this morning. My first thought was it was probably the slightly rich condition its been running in, exacerbated by the quite cool air last night, and that Id have to change the midrange and main jets. The rich running was evident on the dyno last week when under hard acceleration there was some black smoke coming from the exhaust.

So first thing it was off with the aircleaner cover....you can just see some petrol staining on the backing plate indicating too much gas in there at sometime.

Next step is remove the two backing plate bolts that secure it to the heads, and the 3 internal screws.

Having removed the backing plate and fuel line and about to remove the fuel bowl I noticed the enrichment jet holder( choke) had come loose. I removed it completely, added a bit of 262 to the threads and tightened it back up....may have been all the problem was...

However fairly sure it was running a bit rich, as I'd increased the main jet size from 76 to 82 while the motor was still new, so thought it might be a good idea to go down 1 size, to an 80

I wish the mid range jet was easy to remove as the main jet, located up inside the fuel bowl drain plug hole.I  use a largish screwdriver bit on a small ratchet with extension..the one shown here was too small and I had ta find another...

Particularly useless pic trying to show that the jets have a small number stamped on the end of them giving their size...

that done it was put it all back together again....

Next step take it for a ride and see what its like....
