Detectives investigating a bikie clubhouse arson attack in Newcastle have had a breakthrough, charging a rival gang member in Sydney.

The 27-year-old man has been arrested by detectives from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad.

He is accused of an arson attack at the Newcastle headquarters of the Nomads motorcycle gang in November last year.

Police say the alleged offender is a high ranking member of the Hells Angels bikie gang.

The fire he is accused of starting caused more than $50,000 damage to the Nomads clubhouse in Chin Chen Street, Islington.

The man was arrested by police from Strike Force Felix.

It was set up last year to investigate 5 shootings in Sydney and more recently drug, firearm and arson offences.

The Hells Angels member has been refused bail and is due in Campbelltown Local Court in January.
