Extortion suspects arrested
By SAM RICHES

PASSENGERS witnessed a dramatic arrest at Adelaide Airport as police
swooped on members of an interstate motorcycle gang wanted for assault,
stand-over and extortion in Adelaide.
Two of the men, all linked to the
notorious Highway 61 gang, arrived on a Qantas flight from Sydney. A
third man allegedly drove from NSW and met his accomplices at the
airport. It is alleged false documents were used by the men to board the
flight. Using intelligence from NSW police, Avatar detectives and STAR
Group police arrested all three - two aged 30 and a 26-year-old - who
they allege were planning to continue to extort money from a South
Australian man.
The victim, aged in his 40s, was
left with a slash across his face, a broken nose and ribs, a stab wound
to his upper thigh and defence wounds to his arms after being confronted
at Athelstone on March 12. Police will allege the victim, now in police
protection, was known to the men through a drug debt worth thousands.
The three men were refused bail
and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court next week charged with
aggravated serious criminal trespass, grievous bodily harm and
blackmail.
Further arrests, in NSW and SA,
have not been ruled out.
Bikies charged over bashing
From: AAP
April 21, 2006
THREE Sydney bikies have been arrested in Adelaide over the blackmail and
bashing of a local man who allegedly owed money for drugs.
The men, two aged 30 and one aged 26,
were arrested at Adelaide airport this morning.
The three, members of the Highway 61 bikie gang, have been charged with
aggravated serious criminal trespass, causing grievous bodily harm, and
blackmail.
Acting Detective Superintendent Graham
Goodwin said two of the men, who had just flown in from NSW, were met by a
third man who had driven to Adelaide.
It is alleged the men bashed and
stabbed the victim in Adelaide on March 12.
Aged in his 40s, the victim suffered
cuts across the face requiring 15 stitches, a stab wound to the upper leg, a
broken nose and three broken ribs.

The two men who flew into Adelaide today used false identities to board the
domestic flight from Sydney.
Their movements had been tracked with the help of police in NSW and about 20
Adelaide officers were involved in today's operation just outside the
airport terminal building.
Police say it would be alleged the men were planning to further threaten and
injure the victim in what they said was becoming a more common practice of
bikie gangs.
"We are becoming increasingly aware that members of motorcycle gangs and
their associates are threatening and extorting members of the community to
obtain money and other assets," Supt Goodwin said.
"Victims are regularly intimidated and many instances are not reported for
fear of reprisals.
"These people are not constrained by borders and wherever they see an
opportunity to obtain some advantage or some gain they exploit that and
travel great lengths to do it."
The three bikies were refused police bail and were expected to appear in
court at a later time.
Supt Goodwin said inquiries were continuing and he did not rule out further
arrests.
