TWO bikie gangs comprising more than 250 riders took part in
separate "runs" in Adelaide and the South East yesterday.
About 200 Hells Angels members left their Cumberland Park
headquarters about noon, stopping at Sellicks Beach about an hour
later.
Police followed the group in four patrol cars and several unmarked
vehicles.
Around the same time, about 50 riders took part in a Gypsy Jokers
ride at Mt Gambier, heading to Millicent.
The Mt Gambier chapter of the Gypsy Jokers was also under close
police scrutiny during the run, which involved local, state and
interstate members as well as other local riders.
Police patrols were kept waiting for nearly an hour, with the
scheduled 10am run finally starting at 11am.
The event also captured the attention of many residents, who lined
parts of Commercial St to watch the bikies ride out.
An application for a liquor licence was denied for the club's
Commercial St clubrooms, following police intervention. Assistant
Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Michael Jarvis had refused the
request because he was not satisfied the applicants were "fit and
proper persons to obtain the licence".
Superintendent Mark Fairney, from Mt Gambier police, said police
ranks were bolstered by Operation Avatar and motorcycle officers,
who travelled from Adelaide to monitor the run.
"There have been no incidents of note involving the visiting Gypsy
Jokers," he said. "The run has taken off from their clubrooms with
little incident. Numbers appear to be the same as last year and
police have no concerns in relation to the run."
Supt Fairney said he did not believe the bikies would be keen to
"have a show that brings discredit on their club".
"They want to have a good run and have the public join them," he
said.
"There are probably about 50 bikes that have taken off on the run
heading west, but they are not all Gypsy Jokers.
