Police douse gang war fear

Senior police were last night downplaying fears of an imminent bikie war, following the attempted shooting murder of a Nomads gang member in Sydney's west.

A 29-year-old associate of the group was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after being blasted in the back yesterday morning.

The victim and a fellow biker had been riding west on Lancelot Street at Blacktown, towards the club's western-Sydney chapter headquarters.

His assailant, believed to have been a passenger in a white VR Holden Commodore, which had trailed the two men or knew they were due to pass by, fired from a nearby roundabout.

Detectives said the Nomads were out of favour with other gangs following a recent shake-up of its leadership.

But they said there was no suggestion this was linked to the shooting.

"There just hasn't been any evidence of an imminent war," one officer said.

"Considering the sort of lifestyle that the bikies lead, how much conflict they encounter and how many people they clash with on a daily basis, what's happened could be the result of anything," the officer said.

"We might be looking at a domestic. It could be over drugs or something else altogether.

"It could be the opening of a dispute with another group, but we just haven't seen anything to say that's the case."

About 15 police cars and a Polair helicopter swarmed on the scene of the attack just before 10.30am.

Lancelot and several surrounding streets then became the focus of a six-hour forensic investigation, which kept hundreds of residents housebound and others unable to return to their homes.

A MEMBER of a NSW bikie gang was shot in the back today as he rode along a street in Sydney's west, police said today.

The 29-year-old member of the Nomads was riding along Lancelot Street in Blacktown with a friend shortly after 10am (AEDT) when he was shot in the back.
"He ... heard a loud bang and looked around and the other cyclist indicated to him that he'd been shot," Chief Inspector Gary Raymond told the Channel 7.

The shot was reportedly fired from a white Holden Commodore VR sedan. The bullet passed under the man's left shoulder blade and out through his chest, narrowly missing his heart.

Ambulance officers treated the man at the scene and took him to Westmead Hospital, where he was in a serious condition.

Chief Inspector Raymond said at this stage a motive for the shooting was known, but investigations wee continuing.

"We will be making those inquiries as to motive for this shooting."

Police have appealed to the public for information and have asked anyone who saw a white Holden Commodore VR sedan in the area at the time of the shooting to contact Blacktown police.

POLICE are investigating whether the shooting of a motorcyclist as he rode down a Sydney street yesterday was gang-related.

The 28-year-old man was in a critical condition last night after being shot in the back as he rode down Lancelot St, Blacktown with a fellow biker at about 10am.

"The victim was riding when he heard a bang and felt a pain in his chest," Blacktown Chief Inspector Gary Raymond said.

Despite his injury he managed to ride to a friend's house in nearby Merlin St, where an ambulance was called.

He was rushed to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition, later upgraded to critical.

Initial inquiries revealed the gunshot may have come from a white car seen travelling near the riders at the time.

Police confirmed both riders were members of the outlaw Nomads motorcycle club.

"We found some ballistic evidence - a casing and a bullet - that is very valuable to us," Insp Raymond said.

"But what we are really looking for is someone that saw a white Holden VR Commodore."

Anyone with information can contact Blacktown police on 9671 9199 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
