Bikers blow in

THE notorious Gypsy Jokers motorcycle gang dropped into Port Fairy for lunch as part of its annual New Year's run yesterday.

About 100 bikers arrived in town about 1pm, attracting stares from holidaymakers.

By 3.30pm they were back on the road as they headed through Warrnambool, Terang and Camperdown before stopping for beers at the Central Hotel in Colac.

In Port Fairy, many of the gang stopped at the Royal Oak Hotel.

Clad in leather and denim they would have appreciated a cool drink in yesterday's heat.

Manager of the hotel Peter Chamberlain said the gang caused no trouble.

``They just called in for lunch and a couple of drinks and then were off again,'' he said.

``Most of them were drinking light beer.''

Mr Chamberlain said it wasn't the first time the bikers had stopped in at the pub and he said they'd caused no trouble. ``We weren't worried at all.''

Senior Constable Glenn McDuff, of Port Fairy police, said the gang's visit had caused no trouble.

``They were just here for afternoon tea... for an hour or so and moved on,'' he said.

A Colac police spokesman said last night that the gang had stopped for food and moved on without any problem.

The gang set up an illegal camp at Warrnambool's Swan Reserve at the start of 2004 but police decided after negotiation not to move them.

Police said there had been no major problems when the gang camped in Warrnambool.
