Bakir to face new charges
The brother of Gold Coast phone
entrepreneur Ron Bakir will be charged with a raft of new offences
as early as this weekend, a court has been told Yassar Bakir's legal
team on Friday turned up to the Supreme Court in Brisbane to make a
bail application on charges of attempted murder, dangerous conduct
with a weapon and possession of a firearm.
Prosecutor Tamara Thompson announced
that new charges were pending against Bakir and it would be
preferable to hear a bail application, which included the new
charges at a later date.
Ms Thompson said organised crime police had spoken to a key witness
in the case and as a result Bakir would be charged with a great
number of new offences, possibly over the weekend.
"I've been informed that police will be objecting to bail in the
magistrates court on the new charges," Ms Thompson said.
She said the bringing of the new
charges had been delayed because of issues such as supplying the
witness with immunity from prosecution and also issues of
protection.
Bakir, 32, is accused of shooting Pita William Wilson, 30, eight
times at Southport Spit on the Gold Coast on June 9.
Bakir, a member of the Finks
motorcycle club, is the younger brother of Ron Bakir, who helped
finance convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby's defence.
Supreme Court Justice Debra Mullins adjourned the bail application
until next Tuesday, December 12.
