Accused man fears bikie reprisal:
court
Tuesday Jun 13 09:57 AEST
A man charged with attempted murder
has been granted bail despite police fears he would become the victim of a
revenge attack by a bikie gang.
Licensed bouncer Steven Milton Hill,
27, of Ashmore on the Gold Coast, appeared before Southport Magistrates
Court on Monday charged with the attempted murder of New Zealander Pita
William Wilson, 30.
The court was told that Hill had
driven Mr Wilson to the Spit at Main Beach, north of Surfers Paradise, about
9.15pm (AEST) on Friday night to meet a man alleged to be a senior member of
the Finks bikie gang.
Police prosecutor Constable Sarah Fox
said the meeting was supposed to take place at popular tourist spot
Fishermans Wharf but Hill continued driving Mr Wilson along a dark stretch
of road on Seaworld Drive.
Mr Wilson spotted a man walking along the road and Hill stopped his jeep to
let him out for the arranged meeting before continuing to drive further
north until out of sight.
Mr Wilson was shot six times - in the
stomach, hands and right shoulder - as he approached the unknown assailant,
who had concealed the gun behind his back.
"The victim sees a white flash and
falls with pain in his stomach," Const Fox told the hearing.
Hill allegedly did a U-turn in the
jeep and drove past Wilson, failing to help him as he lay on the ground in
distress.
Wilson was later taken to Gold Coast
Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Const Fox opposed bail, fearing Hill's
life could be in danger from members of the Finks bikie gang.
But Hill's solicitor Bill Potts said
outside court his client did not fear any reprisals from the Finks.
"The police allegation is that he may
be in danger because the real perpetrator of the offence, knowing that my
client is a witness, may attempt to kill him," Mr Potts told reporters.
"He rejects such allegations. He says
he's not in any danger at all."
Mr Potts denied Hill was a member of a
bikie gang and said there was no evidence his client had any knowledge
Wilson would be hurt.
Magistrate Catherine Pirie granted
Hill bail on strict conditions. He must reappear in court on June 26 for a
mention.
The incident comes almost three months
after five people were shot or stabbed during a bloody brawl between rival
bikie gangs the Hells Angels and Finks at a kickboxing tournament on the
Gold Coast.
