DESPITE big crowds, made bigger by the presence of about 80 members
of outlaw motorcycle gang Gypsy Jokers, police reported a quiet New
Year in Bunbury.
Eager to celebrate on New Year's Eve, revellers filled the CBD, with
as many as 1500 treated to a 10,000 balloon drop inside the Atrium
at the Quality Hotel Lord Forrest and more than 3800 making the most
of a family night at the Bunbury Trotting Club.
Passing through Bunbury as part of their annual run, Gypsy Jokers
from Perth and the eastern states attended a private house party in
Withers, before about 50 went to the Burlington Hotel.
Bunbury Police Station officer-in-charge senior sergeant Geoff
Fuller said a large police contingent kept watch over the Gypsy
Jokers and had no problems with them during their weekend in
Bunbury. He said in general, police had little trouble with locals
over the weekend.
"It was generally quiet in relation to disturbances with only 16
incidents reported," snr sgt Fuller said.
"Most of those were minor and only two people were arrested for
fighting on New Year's Eve.
"The CBD was busy but the majority of people attending the
nightspots were well behaved."
There was also little action on the traffic scene, which snr sgt
Fuller said was due to an increased number of police vehicles on the
roads.
Australind police also reported a quiet New Year weekend.
