Top bikie 'had weapons cache'

A SENIOR member of the Rebels motorcycle gang had a NSW police uniform and a
cache of dangerous weapons, including a loaded semi-automatic pistol, stored
at his western Sydney home when police conducted a search, a court has
heard.
Ian David Mamo, 36, faces nine
charges, including numerous firearms offences, after allegedly threatening
"extreme personal violence" against a police informant.
Police Prosecutor Melissa Bayllis said
the biker was arrested yesterday in Penrith after detectives had raided his
Castlereagh house following information from the informant and telephone
intercepts.
He was refused bail in Penrith Local
Court today following an extensive investigation by the State Crime
Command's gang squad.
Sgt Bayllis said police had seized a
high-powered pistol, a NSW police uniform, ballistic vest, an extendible
baton and a quantity of ammunition from his house.
The discovery followed a raid on a home in Glenmore Park, in Sydney's west,
in March last year, where police allegedly recovered two rifles, two
self-loading pistols and a quantity of ammunition allegedly belonging to Mr
Mamo.
Sgt Bayllis told the court Mr Mamo had a "healthy suspicion" of the
informant's identity and was heard making threats against the person during
telephone conversations last year.
"The accused is a life member of the Rebels motorcycle gang and indeed has a
high position within the chapter," she told the court.
She said Mr Mamo was heard saying: "I've got to get hold of this c**t ...
because he's got hold of the boy's f***ing rifles, f***ing, mate."
In another conversation he was allegedly heard saying to the informant "when
you're f***ing on the ground under my boot ... I will f***ing baton you,
mate".
The threat against the informant and that person's family would increase
"100-fold" if Mr Mamo was released on bail, Sgt Bayllis told the court.
The court was told the informant's family's house was smashed up twice in
April and May last year.
Mr Mamo is alleged to have told the informant's father: "I don't know how
much I've got to cop before I start getting nasty."
Mr Mamo's lawyer said the prosecution's case was "highly contested".
He said Mr Mamo suffered depression, had post traumatic stress related to an
accident that killed his friend, and also had to care for his daughter, who
has cerebral palsy.
Mr Mamo had never been in jail before and had a friend who could provide
$30,000 in cash to ensure he would not break strict bail conditions, he
said.
Mr Mamo has been charged with possessing more than three unregistered
firearms, possessing prohibited firearms, two counts of possessing
prohibited article, possessing a police uniform, two counts of possessing
ammunition and two counts of not keeping prohibited firearms safely.
He did not enter a plea.
Magistrate Paul Sloane remanded Mr Mamo in custody to appear in the same
court on May 12.

Police have seized a high-powered handgun and police identification and
arrested a senior member of a motorcycle gang in a raid in west Sydney.
Officers from the police gangs squad
arrested the 36-year-old man about 11.30am (AEDT) yesterday in Penrith
before searching a house in nearby Castlereagh, police said.
Police seized a loaded high-powered
semi-automatic pistol, ballistic vest, NSW police identification, an
extendable baton and a quantity of ammunition.
The Castlereagh man was charged with
possessing more than three unregistered firearms, possessing a prohibited
firearm, two counts of possessing a prohibited article, goods in custody,
possessing ammunition and not keeping prohibited firearms safely.
Police said some of the charges
related to the seizure of property in a raid on a home in Glenmore Park in
Sydney's west in March last year.
Two rifles and two self-loading
pistols and ammunition were among items seized in that raid.
The man is due in Penrith Local Court
today.
