BRINGING a burly, tattooed bikie to tears is not easy. But telling him he
has just won $1.83 million will do it.
That was Barry Bergin's reaction when he found out his numbers had come up
in last Saturday's Gold Lotto.
The lucky member of the Bandidos motorcycle gang and his wife, Danea, from
Bogangar on the NSW North Coast, cried with joy after checking their entry
on Monday night.
"They just looked at each other and burst into tears. And Barry's a big man.
Nothing scares him but he's really a big teddy bear," said friend Michelle
Walsh.
"I'm so happy for them. They've worked like dogs all their life and they're
just wonderful people and I couldn't think of anyone more deserving.
"When I found out I was shaking and crying like I'd won. It's unbelievable."
The couple, who have three children aged eight, 18 and 21, fled the seaside
town yesterday after their windfall in the $22 million draw was revealed in
a local newspaper.
They were nowhere to be seen at the rundown unit where they live.
Neighbour Harley Phillips said the couple were "numb" with excitement over
the win.
"I'm rapt for them," she said. "They were a bit shocked. I don't think it'll
sink in for a couple of days yet," she said.
Bikie sources told The Courier-Mail that Mr Bergin was known as "Uncle Mad"
and was a former national sergeant-at-arms for the Bandidos.
