New public liability insurance proposal
Thursday, 6th October, 2005 - -
A public liability insurance option is currently in the works to
organisations (non profit and commercial) that conduct recreational
activities for registered motorcycles (on and off road) and other
activities incidental thereto.
The insurance is not sourced through any national motorcycle body,
it is a group arrangement that has been achieved with an Australian
insurance broker and an Australian approved insurance company.
For any motorcycle club, tour operator, bike shop, etc this could
mean that your organisation would not be restricted with insurance
permits, the number of events or the number of riders you can take
in your activities. Yes, just like the good old days!
There are four simple rules for your organisation to be able to
obtain its own public liability insurance to conduct recreational
activities for registered motorcycles:
1. Organisations must engage the consultancy services of the non
profit organisation (NPO) that secured this group insurance
arrangement. The consultancy services of the NPO will involve the
development of the organisations operations manuals, which is to
meet the insurers minimum requirements;
2. Ride leaders and event assistants must obtain formal
qualifications for organising and conducting motorcycle tours/
events within the first twelve months of insurance, but preferably
prior to the conduct of your first event. This can easily be
achieved through a process of recognition of prior learning with a
registered training organisation that is aligned with the NPO. Such
a process would simply include an at home assignment and a video
recording of the processes you go through to conduct your events, in
accordance with the operations manuals supplied;
3. If Organisations conduct off road events, it must endeavour to
obtain affiliation with a nominated tourism association and present
the organisations membership to the insurer within the first 12
months of insurance. Road going motorcycle organisations are also
encouraged to achieve this affiliation. The NPO will assist you to
achieve this membership as part of the consultancy services; and
4. The NPO must conduct a yearly workplace health and safety audit
on your organisations operations, which is also part of the insurers
minimum requirements. Such an audit shall occur through a mystery
rider scenario and you will receive a report outlining any
recommendations or changes that your organisation should implement.
A definitive cost is still to be set by the NPO to provide such
consultancy services and will only be determined by the number of
organisations willing to participate in the group arrangement. So
the more motorcycle clubs, tour operators, bike shops, etc you can
get involved in the group, the cheaper the consultancy fees and
insurance costs will be.
Who can get this public liability insurance? Bike shops, motorcycle
manufacturers, motorcycle clubs, tour operators and any other
organisation conducting recreational activities for registered
motorcycles (on and off road) can get this public liability
insurance.
20 in the first year organisations are needed to establish the group
arrangement with the insurer? .
To register your organisation’s interest in being a part of this
group arrangement simply email your organisations details,
organisation contact name and email to groupmotoinsurance@yahoo.com.au.
Interested organisations need to register by October 31, 2005 for
inclusion in this group public liability insurance arrangement.
If all goes to plan with the proposal and the NPO gets the minimum
number of organisations required for the insurer, applicants will
receive an application help sheet and an electronic application for
insurance to complete.
