A HELLS Angels bikie has been arrested in Adelaide and charged with a string of offences in a joint operation by South Australian police and the Australian Crime Commission.

Police said today the man was charged with theft, assault, possessing a prohibited weapon and dishonesty offences.

He was taken into custody on May 6 and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.

The weapons charge relates to a 9mm pistol found in his car while the theft involves a vehicle worth $76,000.

Detective Inspector Graham Goodwin said police were becoming increasingly aware that members of motorcycle gangs and their associates were threatening members of the community to extort money and other goods.

"Victims are regularly intimidated and many incidents are not reported for fear of reprisals," he said.

"With the arrest of this person other victims or persons with information may come forward with confidence.

"This arrest has not only removed another illegal handgun from the community but also sends a clear warning to others involved in these activities that their actions will not be tolerated."

Police, crime commission focus on bikies
Police say they are cracking down on motorcycle gang members who terrify people into handing over money and other belongings.

South Australian Police and the Australian Crime Commission are running a joint operation that focuses on bikies.

Detective Inspector Graham Goodwin says police have found people are regularly assaulted or intimidated for their valuables but many are too scared to make an official report.

However, there was a breakthrough last Friday.

"A 40-year-old male from Fulham, who's a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, was arrested for a number of offences, including theft, assault, possessing a prohibited weapon and other dishonesty offences," he said.

Police allege he stole a $76,000 car after threatening and assaulting the owner and was recently arrested for allegedly carrying a loaded pistol.
