Fears Of Further Gang Clashes

The Police Association says gang clashes in Wanganui are further proof the
police need to target gang crime to prevent such violence escalating.
Two men were sent to hospital after
Mongrel Mob and Hells Angels members clashed in separate incidents in the
city yesterday.
Mongrel Mob and Hells Angels members,
armed with baseball bats, clashed at a service station in Wanganui East
yesterday afternoon.
In the second confrontation, cars were
rammed, car windows smashed and shots reportedly fired.
Police have arrested six people on
various charges and say they will appear in court over the next few days.
One gang member remains in hospital with head injuries.
Police Association president Greg
O'Connor says gangs are present in all areas of the country and are involved
in most crime.
Mr O’Connor says many local
authorities don't believe they have a gang problem because they don't see
active violence on their streets.
He says unless many of the 1,000 new
police the government has promised focus on gang investigation, violence on
the streets will only get worse.
Several gang members are expected in
court today after violent confrontations between rival gangs in Wanganui.
