Fruitless search for body

05nov05
ANOTHER search for the remains of missing former Gypsy Jokers leader Steve Williams has been unsuccessful.

More than 30 police officers and SES volunteers yesterday spent five hours scouring the Heini Becker Motorcycle Sports Park on Wilkins Rd, Gillman, for a gravesite. Nearby vacant land and a stormwater drain were also searched for remains.

Detective Superintendent Peter Woite said a two square kilometre area was searched, based on information given to police from sources.

It included an anonymous caller to the Crime Stoppers number, whom police last week had asked to call back.

"That person has responded to the call to provide further information and that information is very crucial to the investigation," Det-Supt Woite said.

"It is a particularly large area so we do need the large amount of resources we have here. If anyone does have any information (about the disappearance) they are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

Major Crime investigators, STAR Group, mounted police and Water Operations were involved in the search which finished about 2.30pm.

Mr Williams was reported missing on June 14. Previous searches of the Southern Waste Depot in Maslin Beach on June 29 and a trucking firm at Gillman on October 25 also failed to find remains or clues to his whereabouts.
