OPPOSITION Leader Will Hodgman has ruled out introducing Queensland-style anti-bikie laws if elected, saying such a strong stance was "not necessary" in Tasmania.
Mr Hodgman responded to concerns raised by members of Tasmanian motorcycle clubs, including the Rebels, who publicly raised the issue on Parliament Lawns in Hobart yesterday.
The clubs said they had received a letter from Opposition police spokeswoman Elise Archer, which did not explicitly rule out the option.
Mr Hodgman said the Liberals would rely on their policy of a $7 million serious and organised crime unit to handle all organised crime, including anything related to motorcycle gangs.
"We are taking very seriously the need to deal with serious and organised crime in Tasmania, that's why we've got a policy to re-establish that unit and make our streets safer, but we certainly do not propose or think the sort of things that are happening in Queensland are necessary here," he said.
The government has also said anti-association laws of the type introduced in Queensland were not necessary in Tasmania.
